Historic Farmhouse Addition

Gaithersburg, MD

Montgomery Preservation Award, 2005
Fall, 2008 cover story "Once Upon a Farm" in Washington Home & Garden Magazine

The historic portions of this farm house were joined in the 1970's by a bulky addition that occupied the space to the north of the main house, awkwardly filling in the original ell.  The addition and restoration of the house started by removing this addition.

Taking cues from the historic fabric, a courtyard was created to the north, bringing ambient light into the rear rooms left 'land-locked' by the previous addition.  This allowed attractive spaces to be formed around a central void, reestablishing the clarity of the original design.
